Life is Like Driving at Night
By EJ Thornton
author of Angel On Board

I do not have perfect vision and even suffer worse vision at night. When I drive at night, I need to know where I'm going.

If I have to try and find something, it can put me in peril, because I can only see well enough to get there, I don't want to look for landmarks or street signs when I'm just able to stay on the road. I also have a terrible sense of direction - but that is yet another story. Especially at night, I need to know where it is that I am going.

On the highway, the exits or turns that I have to take are very clearly marked - usually with lights around and lines drawn, etc. From a distance, I know that the change is coming and I can even do some anticipatory things to prepare for it but even with my headlights, I can't see where it is or what exactly I need to do to accomplish it. I just know it is coming. But, I'm not there yet, I'm still back a ways and I'm not supposed to be there yet, because I need to cross this patch of road to get from here to there. This patch of road could be dry, icy, wet, I could be alone on it, I could be surrounded by other cars - but this is where I am. This is where I'm supposed to be at this point in time, because I have to be here to get there. I can't see it yet - but I know the turn is coming, because I know the general direction I'm going in.

As I approach the turn, I can see it in the distance. The precise details are still not clear, and the anticipation grows, now that I have a visual lock on the target. The confirmation that I was right is there. That is where the change will come. But the exact time and place that I'm actually supposed to turn, is still unclear. I can see the general area, but I'm not close enough to see the actual markings. I still have time to change lanes, avoid other cars, speed up, slow down or decide that I've changed my mind about the path I want to take to the destination or even the destination itself.

But what if... What if someone is blocking your path? What if you didn't get into the lane when you were supposed to? Now there are cars in between you and your turn and they won't let you over. What if you're about to completely miss the turn. Do you panic and pull a dangerous maneuver to get there, putting yourself and the other cars in jeopardy? Do you accept that there might be another path to the same destination, and maybe you were supposed to take that instead? Do you slow down or speed up? Does your perception or acceptance of the situation change? Or do you relax and know that even if it isn't quite what you thought it would be, the way will still be made clear and you are still where you are supposed to be?

No matter what, I still get to where I'm going. I make the turn I need to because at this point, I can see the destination, but I can't always see the path clearly, until I am right on it. But by the time I need to commit to the turn, the lines are clearly visible, the lights are usually on and the way is made clear.

So, all that worrying about how and when to turn, before the fact, was, in essence, in vain, because when it becomes critical, the path is clearly marked and quite easy to follow.

Relax, live and enjoy the moment, because you're right where you are supposed to be and the way is always made clear.
